VISIT THE VILLAGE OF OLD HERSONISSOS & PORT OF HERSONISSOS

Villa Medusa is located in the outskirts of the village Old (Palia) Hersonissos, 25 Km from the International Airport of Heraklion, driving along the northern high way towards the east, only a few meters from the exit of the main road Hersonissos – Kastelli, a journey of about 20-30 minutes by car.

Within a short walk (about 200 meters) one can find the Old Hersonissos village’s main square with local traditional taverns, cafés, mini markets and grocery stores and pharmacy. Many Greek evenings are also organized there with traditional Cretan nights, dances and live music.

The area of Hersonissos, also known as Port of Hersonissos (Limenas Chersonissou) extends between Anissaras and Stalida and consists of the Hersonissos Harbor and the three traditional villages – Ano or Old Chersonissos, Piskopiano and Koutouloufari, all three situated on the hill overlooking the Cretan Sea.

A walk to the Hersonissos harbor (Limin Hersonissou) about 3 km offers a variety of shopping possibilities, small and remote beaches or bigger and central ones that are organised and offer water sports as well as cosmopolitan activities. A big market with various shops but also bars and restaurants by the sea are waiting for you to make your holidays most enjoyable.

Sports are present offering a variety of possibilities including tennis, bicycle and water sports. The famous, high standard Cretan Golf Club is a great attraction for the enthusiasts of golf as well as scuba diving and water parks within 4 km from the hotel.

It is highly recommended to rent a car in order to be able to explore the island. The history, the archaeological sites, the protected biotopes, the gorges, the caves, the mountains, the walking paths (trekking) through the villages and the traditional elements remain very important for our guests!!

For the archeology enthusiasts Minoan Crete is a major attraction with a history of many centuries. The Minoan Palace at Mallia, a few kilometres on the outskirts of Hersonissos, or a bit farther away the Minoan Palace of Knossos, just 5 km to the south-east of Heraklion are among the closest and most famous archaeological centres. The archeological museum of Heraklion is particularly interesting and is home to the most important collection of Minoan art in the world, situated in modern facilities. Nearby one can also find the agricultural museums of Lychnostatis and Menelaos Parlamas featuring a wide range of collections and representations of the rural life of Crete.

At approximately 15 minutes by car you can visit the well known Crete Aquarium at Gournes. It is one of the largest and most organised in the Mediterranean. If you would like to go a bit farther away, you can visit the picturesque town of St. Nicolas (Agios Nikolaos) with its famous lake or even combine it with a sea visit to the once known as the island of the lepers, Spinalonga. Once there you will also have the possibility to visit the cosmopolitan town of Elounda.

For those who love tradition, the small villages of the wider area of Hersonissos and Lassithi await you to give you the best taste of Cretan hospitality and the warmth of the local people.

We are at your disposal to provide you with all the information you need in order to make your stay most enjoyable and full of beautiful memories from our island.
